Avocado on Winter Solstice

The knife should be keen
to halve it:
slice in one oval motion,
a twist and soft-sucked pull
to separate.

seven a.m.
waiting skyline
civil twilight

Flick the blade into the pit,
a harsh wrist-turn
to pluck it out.

the morning murky

Use a blunt knife now,
rounded and best
to make dull cuts.

a day starts to hang light
like wallpaper

A slow scoop
to drop slim wedges on a plate,
fleshy and begging for lime.
