New Home

My memories here are shallow
like the bushes in the yard
planted after the house was built,
shrubbery with the correct appearance
compact and leafy
(in winter a scaffold of twigs)
but when I try to cut a hole
to plant tulip bulbs,
my trowel only penetrates the ground
a couple of inches, slicing a net
of surface roots that shows
the shrubs grow hydroponically
(dependent on city water &
sprinklers) in hard-packed
lava rock.
