Reflex

Even when it’s raining, even when it’s dry
Even when I’m hungry, even when I’m full
Even when I’m loud, even when I’m laughing
At the top of my noise:
The mammalian dive reflex, the way a heartbeat instantly slows underwater
I still ether-dream the cautious footsteps
Of wolves under evergreen snow
Singing glasslike against the wildfire
